In the competitive world of custom part manufacturing, efficiency is the key to profitability and growth. For companies seeking highquality, precision CNC machined parts, understanding and applying Design for Manufacturing (DFM) principles is not just a recommendation—it's a strategic necessity. Adhering to these guidelines ensures your designs are not only functional but also optimized for costeffective and rapid production, directly accelerating your timetomarket.

One of the most fundamental rules is to prioritize internal vertical corners. CNC tools are cylindrical, making it impossible to create a sharp internal corner. Always specify a radius for internal pockets and edges. A standard endmill size radius simplifies tooling and reduces cost. Similarly, deep cavities with high depthtodiameter ratios should be avoided as they require specialized longreach tools, increase machining time, and risk tool deflection, compromising accuracy.

Wall thickness is another critical consideration. Excessively thin walls are prone to vibration during machining, leading to poor surface finish and potential part failure. We recommend a minimum wall thickness of 1mm for metals and 1.5mm for plastics to ensure structural integrity. Furthermore, standardizing hole sizes to common drill bit dimensions eliminates the need for custom tools and nonvalueadded programming time.

Designing with standard stock material sizes in mind can drastically reduce material waste and cost. Whenever possible, avoid features that require 5axis machining unless absolutely necessary for the part's function, as this significantly increases programming and machine time. For text, emboss it rather than engraving it, as this removes less material and is faster to machine.
